International human rights lawyer Simone Monasebian holds a Political Science and a Juris Doctor degree from New York University and Syracuse University College of Law, respectively. With three decades of experience in the legal sphere, most of her roles in various institutions have focused on combating human trafficking and atrocity crimes and
advocating for criminal legal system reform. Currently, Simone Monasebian is Chief Program Officer with Sanctuary for Families in New York.
At this New York-based organization supporting survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, as well as sex trafficking, Ms. Monasebian’s roles are diverse. She oversees and manages programs to address survivors’ needs, including shelter, counseling, workforce development, case management, and legal services.
Simone Monasebian is responsible for managing a highly skilled team of professionals supporting over 8000 survivors of gender-based violence across New York each year. She and her team are an integral part of Sanctuary's advocacy and outreach efforts to educate approximately 11,000 community members each year on issues related to abuse and violence prevention.
Before joining Sanctuary for Families, Ms. Monasebian served with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in New York where she focused on advocating for survivors of sexual violence and amplifying their voices on the global stage. Before that she oversaw the legal services system at the Special Court for Sierra Leone and worked with the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, advocating for genocide survivors in Kigali, Rwanda and Arusha Tanzania. Prior to joining the United Nations she was an associate at the Law Offices of Michael Kennedy, P.C., where she handled complex criminal and civil cases.
Ms. Monasebian is admitted to the practice of law in the State and Federal Courts of New York and Connecticut as well as the District of Columbia. She is an at-large member of the Council on International Affairs of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and a member of the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association. Her interests outside work include listening to old school R&B music, kayaking, snowshoeing, poetry, and road trips with her toddler.
