TVT Records was one of the largest and most successful independent record companies in US history. The company was distinguished by its eclectic roster and enjoyed success in almost every genre of music from pop, jazz, rock, broadway, rap, reggae, and techno music. Beginning in 1985 with its release of an album paying homage to the American TV Theme, Television's Greatest Hits, the company went on to release acclaimed albums by such artists as Nine Inch Nails, Sevendust, Snoop Dogg and Tha Eastsidaz, Default, Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz, XTC , Guided by voices, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Just Jack, Underworld, Bounty Killer, Pitbull, Ying Yang Twins, Gil Scott Heron Jurasic Five, Ja Rule, KMFDM and Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes among others. Over the course of its 25 year history the fiercely independent label put out over 20 Gold, Platinum and multi platinum releases, more than any other label with no affiliation with one of the majors.
TVT was a pioneer in digital music exploitation. In 2000 it became the first label to put its entire catalog on line available for download. it was the first label to settle copyright licensing with Napster and label President Steve Gottlieb joined Napster's advisory board actively lobbying other labels to license the company and help it transition to legitimacy.
The label was sold in 2008 to The Orchard.
Its founder and CEO Steve Gottlieb now runs Shindig a web start up.
