Dr. Zane Gates was reared in an Altoona housing project by a single mother. Despite having a difficult background, he managed to finish high school and enroll in the University of Pittsburgh's pharmacy and later medical schools. He returned to Altoona following medical school and an internal medicine residency to establish his own mobile free
clinic for the working poor. After collaborating with the Altoona Regional Health System, this became Partnering for Health Services, giving 3,500 people in Altoona access to free medical treatment annually. He was continuously working on creating a new system that would deliver better healthcare at a lesser cost. PeopleOne Health later evolved from that approach.
