Tom Sawyer graduated from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in education and later joined his family’s waste management and recycling business, where he worked for 27 years. During that time, he was recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration as Entrepreneur of the Year and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1990. He has
a longstanding association with Maine Maritime Academy, where his father was a member of the class of 1945, and he has served the institution as both a Visitor and a Trustee. His public service includes roles on the Bangor City Council, as mayor of Bangor, and as a state senator. He has also participated in the governance of various nonprofit and for-profit organizations.
