Dr. Stirling Puck received her B.A. from Harvard University in 1969 and her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1975. She stayed at Yale for her internship and residency in pediatrics and fellowship in medical genetics. In 1980 she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she practiced pediatric and prenatal clinical genetics,
consulted with the State Health Department to establish acceptable ground water safety standards, and led the NM Newborn Screening Committee.
In 1981 she became Medical Director of the fledgling commercial genetics testing company of Vivigen, Inc., later Genzyme Genetics, a division of Genzyme Corporation. She established and upheld the medical standards for what became a national network of seven genetic testing laboratories, two specialty referral pathology laboratories, and twelve direct-to-patient prenatal genetic counseling programs (genetic counselors supervised by clinical geneticists) including ones in New York, Florida, Texas and California. She developed the HIPAA Compliance and Privacy programs for all functions of the division, and managed the related policies, concerns, audits and educational programs for the 1700 employees. In 2010, when the division had grown into a $371 million business in the U.S. and Japan, it was sold to Laboratory Corporation of America and Dr. Puck left to become an independent consultant.
A member of the American Society of Human Genetics, she served on the ASHG Foundation’s Committee for Clinical Guidelines in Medical Genetics from 1996-98, helping to establish the guidelines for breast cancer screening. A Founding Member of the American College of Medical Genetics, she served on the ACMG Committee on the Economics of Genetic Services for five years and was then Chair for two years (2007-09). She is Board certified in Pediatrics, Clinical Genetics and Clinical Cytogenetics, and from 1982-2011 held New York State Department of Health Certificates of Qualification in Cytogenetics, Endocrinology and Fetal Defect Markers, and Genetic Testing.
