Stephen Gleave is a Canadian lawyer who maintains the deep roots established by his ancestors on the family farm in Ancaster. Connection to the land on the Ancaster farm kept him centered to where he successfully tried many of the biggest employment law cases in Canada. During his 30 year career practicing law, Stephen has consistently been
recognized as a leading commercial litigation lawyer and has successfully completed 300 Labour and commercial arbitrations, 50 trials, and 50 Labor and Civil Injunctions. As such, he has been named to the Best Lawyers in Canada guide and Best Lawyers Global Business list for his extensive knowledge of Labour and Employment. He partly credits his tenure and success with his ability to leave the stress of the courtroom and the city behind and immerse himself in tending to the farm in Ancaster.
Stephen studied law at Queens. He earned an LL.B. there before moving on to graduate studies in law at Oxford University. After which, he was admitted to the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Ontario. Now a recognized expert in the field of Canadian employment law, Stephen has delivered speeches to legal conferences and has contributed to several media outlets.
Stephen is a partner at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP. He joined the Toronto law firm in 2019 after having spent the majority of his professional career at the Hicks Morley law firm.
His legal accomplishments include the following: won an injunction to prevent the client’s competitor from lifting employees of a competitor and argued that millions of dollars in advance payments to a shareholder was improper and the shareholder was forced to sell to agree to a commercial closing in order to be paid for the shares. Some of Stephens most recent legal feats include: upholding of forfeiture of executive compensation plans on behalf of a Canadian bank, two cases discussing situations in which the seller of a business is entitled to higher earn out payments due to oppression in the insurance sector, and dismissing a class action over retiree benefits on behalf of a major Canadian insurance company. Additionally, Stephen is well-versed in the forensic inspection of media devices (computers, etc.) in regards to the collection, preservation, and integrity of digital evidence found on those devices. It was an expertise he developed, somewhat by necessity, over the years as a litigator. Now, he teaches seminars on the topic to other attorneys. Throughout his career, Stephen has been able to find the balance between technology and nature; bustling ambition and quiet reflection thanks to the land his family passed down to him in Ancaster.
Due to COVID 19, Stephen relocated his offices from Toronto to The Beasley. He now leases a space from his good friend John Vitulli, one of Hamilton’s leading corporate and real estate lawyers. Practicing together at The Beasley office has enriched both of their professional lives and their Toronto clients love the area’s vibrant restaurant scene. In his spare time, Stephen enjoys spending time with his family at their Ancaster farm, running, and fly fishing.
