Sim Fern is the Claims Director of Northeast at United Claims Specialists. She founded Upbeat Designs as a comprehensive provider of custom furniture design, upholstery, and high-end millwork services for residential and commercial real estate applications of all kinds in the New York City metro area. Upbeat Designs is perfectly situated in the
Brooklyn area with access to quality materials, locally made American furniture, and a plethora of vendors and clients in the interior design, architecture, hospitality, and restaurant industries.
As a longtime worker in the furniture industry, Sim Fern always had a passion for furniture making and woodworking. As a teenager, Sim worked for a company to carry out home furniture repairs and warranty services for major furniture retailers. From there, Sim continued to work in the industry by conducting one-off furniture repairs, refinishing and restorations on his own. This time around, Sim’s knowledge in fabrication was challenged to carefully craft and restore fragile mid-century furniture to its former glory.
Ready to branch out on his own, Sim founded Upbeat Designs to further his career in the furniture fabrication industry. The transition from random fix-it projects for homeowners to a business that’s much more stable is Sim Fern’s proudest career accomplishment to date. However, Sim has to admit that figuring out a sustainable business plan is easier said than done — particularly in the fast-paced and changing world of design.
One of the most valuable lessons Sim learned is the power of not only learning his trade, but the trade of his clients as well. By reading industry news and networking and collaborating with others, Sim was able to gain firsthand experience and advice that wasn’t always available in reference materials. Sim Fern’s networking opportunities is what helped him to launch his business. By using his network, Sim collaborated with a clientele of reliable vendors who regularly need to deliver projects to their own clients.
With the unbelievable growth of Upbeat Designs, combined with his drive to meet the high standards of elegant craftsmanship and discipline, Sim Fern and his team are able to consistently create beautiful custom visions of design and art for his clients, bringing their creative visions on paper to life. Some recent projects Sim and his team have worked on include designing Bond Collectives the Mezzanine, which is an event space located on Broadway, and designing the space for the Grand Central Squash Tournament, which is an international squash championship held in Grand Central Station in New York City.
Today, Sim Fern is interested in the way furniture design continues to evolve while balancing aesthetically pleasing design with utilitarian purpose. Since he’s always looking for new inspiration, learning and networking opportunities, Sim attends the Architectural Digest show annually, where he’s exposed to some of the most exciting design inspirations and innovations today. Some of his interests in the field include 3D printing, virtual reality, and modular design.
