Shaibal has worked on databases and messaging systems at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bell Labs, Sybase, Netscape, Charles Schwab and RIM/BlackBerry. At Schwab he almost single-handedly created the electronic trade notification system that has saved Schwab millions in postal
mailing costs. He also led the engineering teams at two venture-funded start-ups, the first acquired by Netscape and the second by Research in Motion (RIM). In 2002, RIM acquired the start-up he co-founded, for its technology to extend all consumer email system including AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Gmail onto BlackBerry devices. As the Chief Architect at RIM 2002-2006, Shaibal spearheaded the growth of BlackBerry's consumer email services from 400,000 to 14 million handsets. Today that super-reliable technology he developed for consumer mobile email is used in all BlackBerries and is mimicked by all smartphones today. Shaibal graduated with the Silver Medal in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur and has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. He is passionate about the use of information technology in participatory medicine, where all individuals are empowered and informed about their own health and well-being.
