Robert Webster is the primary inventor of the technology at the heart of the Virtuoso device and serves as the Virtuoso Surgical team's strategic technical leader. He is a mechanical and electrical engineering professor at Vanderbilt University, where he conducts research on the intersection of engineering and surgery. Numerous awards,
including the National Science Foundation Career Award, the IEEE Volz Award, and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Career Award, have recognised his contributions to robotic surgery. He is one of the co-founders of the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE), which brings together surgeons and engineers to solve difficult clinical problems. He is a Clemson University and Johns Hopkins University graduate.
