Robert Singer has been the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Vice-President of the World Jewish Congress since May 2013. Prior to that, he served for 14 years as the London-based Director General and CEO of World ORT, the largest Jewish education and vocational training non-governmental organization in the world, with activities in over
60 countries and providing educational and training services to thousands of people world-wide. Under his stewardship, the 133-year-old organization became renowned for its professionalism and effectiveness in delivering innovative and practical solutions to the needs of Jewish and non-Jewish communities.
From 1987 to 1999, Robert Singer held senior positions with the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, serving under the Prime Ministers Yitzhak Shamir, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu. During that time he also served as Head of the PM’s mission to the US and Canada and the liaison between the Israeli and American governments on issues concerning Jews in the former Soviet Union countries and in Eastern Europe. Singer was instrumental in developing diplomatic relations and negotiating agreements with governments in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Between 1976 and 1987, he served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) where his rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The last position he held in the IDF was Chief Education Officer of the Southern Command.
Robert Singer was born in Ukraine in 1956 and moved to Israel with his family at the age of 15. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Tel Aviv University in 1976. In 1996, he received a Master of Science in Management Engineering from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Between 2005 and 2008, he completed several executive management courses at Harvard Business School and Columbia Business School.
He is fluent in Hebrew, English and Russian and also speaks Ukrainian and Yiddish.
