Robert Beatty is part of the first wave of Theravada Buddhist teachers who introduced Insight Meditation and Mindfulness practices from Asia in the 1970s. His approach to teaching meets students where they are, blending Buddhist principles with Western psychotherapy in a way that has touched the lives of thousands. His style is rooted in
authenticity, and he often shares his own experiences to encourage deep reflection. His teachings use a mix of meditation, music, poetry, humor, and movement to help others engage with life’s challenges with openness and compassion.
Robert had the privilege of learning from several renowned teachers throughout his journey. He studied with a teacher for over four decades, gaining valuable insights into the Buddhist practice. In 1982, he was authorized to teach within the Burmese Buddhist tradition. He further deepened his understanding by studying non-dual spirituality and taking novice ordination in Burma. His teachings were also shaped by his experiences in India, where he practiced under other influential figures in the Buddhist community.
After earning his BSc in Psychology and Chemistry from McGill University, Robert embarked on a journey of self-discovery. He traveled the world for five years, living and working in Australia and Switzerland. His life changed profoundly when he encountered Buddhist meditation during a retreat in 1972, leading him to ordain as a monk in India. However, due to health issues, he could not continue and returned to Canada. His experiences during this time sparked a deep commitment to understanding the connection between personal well-being and the environment.
Upon returning to Canada, Robert pursued a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies, where he began to combine Western psychotherapy with Buddhist practices. His academic work focused on how humanity can become more aware of its impact on the environment and how individuals can live in greater harmony with nature and each other.
In 1979, Robert moved to Portland, Oregon, where he continued his education and became a licensed social worker. He spent several years working in addiction treatment and hospice care, where he provided support for individuals facing serious life transitions.
In 1980, Robert founded a meditation group that grew into a well-established community. His leadership in the community helped it flourish, eventually leading to the purchase of a space that became a hub for meditation classes and retreats. After many years of teaching, he stepped down from the organization in 2024 to focus on individual consultations and teaching.
Robert has written a book titled Mindfulness for a Happy Life: New Teachings of an Old Tradition for Today's World. Over his career, he has helped countless individuals address their emotional and psychological challenges and achieve a more meaningful life. His teachings, which have reached thousands through residential retreats and conferences, can be found in various formats, including podcasts and videos. He is committed to helping people navigate life’s complexities and live more fully.
Robert continues to teach meditation and Buddhist psychology and offers individual consultations to guide people through their spiritual, emotional, and psychological journeys. His work can be explored further on his website.
