Dr. Beart is a recognized specialist and expert in colorectal diseases and cancer who pioneered many innovations including the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, the development of laparoscopic colon surgery, and the advancement of complex rectal cancer care. From 1976 through 1992, Dr. Beart worked at the Mayo Clinic where he was chairman of the
Department of Colorectal Surgery. He then joined the faculty at the University of Southern California (USC) as a tenured professor of surgery and served as chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery.
Dr. Beart also established the USC Center for Colorectal Diseases. He is a past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and the International Society of University Colorectal Surgeons. Current and past corporate boards include: SafeShot Technologies (past president and Chairman), Radient Pharmaceuticals and Epeius Biotechnologies. He has authored more than 400 papers and has 12 patents in his name.
