Dr. Ravi S. Chari was born in Edmonton, Alberta and raised in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine in 1989 and was awarded the W.S. Lindsay Gold Medal for finishing first in the class. He completed his surgical residency at Duke University. Following the completion of his residency, he
entered fellowship training at the University of Toronto in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Abdominal Organ Transplanation.
In 2008, he received his MBA degree from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Dean’s Award, for again finishing first in the class. His first staff appointment was Assistant Professor of Surgery and Cell Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the UMass Memorial Health Center. He then accepted a position at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as Associate Professor of Surgery in 2001.
He rose to the level of Chief of the Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantaion (2004) and Professor (with tenure) of Surgery and Cancer Biology (2005).
In October 2008, Dr. Chari accepted a position with the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA, Inc.) working as Chief Medical Officer at their flagship hospital, Centennial Medical Center, in the TriStar Division.
From October 2009 to March 2010, he served as interim Administrator/ Chief Operating Officer of the Sarah Cannon Cancer Centers for the 18 hospital TriStar division.
In November 2010, Dr. Chari was promoted to CMO, TriStar division, and in September 2011, he was promoted to his current position as Vice President of Clinical Services Group, to lead the corporate wide Clinical Excellence initiative. This corporate wide program is aimed at reducing avoidable clinical variation by establishing company wide clinical standards and measures, data systems and engaging physician leadership.
Dr. Chari has authored or coauthored over 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, 30 chapters, 3 textbooks and is a member of 6 editorial boards, incluidng Cancer and Surgery. He is the current Treasurer of the Surgical Fellowship Foundation and the immediate past secretary of the Society of University Surgeons. Castle-Connolly has named him as one of America’s Top Doctors for Cancer Surgery in 2007- 2012 and he has been selected as one of America’s Best Doctors, 2007- 12. Dr. Chari enjoys jogging and biking. Dr. Chari lives in Nashville, Tennesee with his wife, Sharon E. Albers M.D., and their two children, Tristan, 16 and Danielle, 13.
