Qi Chen is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Mogujie. Mogujie started out as a social site where users created photo collages of fashion items. Now it is a fashion e-commerce platform where the company makes money from merchants paying commissions.
A videogame enthusiast who majored in computer science, Chen, who joined Alibaba in
2004, helped design the interface of Alibaba’s shopping site, Taobao, including a system that allows merchants to monitor transactions. He came up with the idea of a fashion-themed e-commerce site after seeing the heavy traffic generated by his wife’s fashion blog.
Chen Qi quit his software engineering job at Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. in 2010 to start an Internet venture he financed by selling all of his Alibaba shares for $500,000.
Mogujie now has nearly 100 million users, but Chen declined to comment on whether it is profitable. Alibaba has approached Mogujie about buying a stake, according to Chen, but he says he wants his startup to stay independent. Alibaba declined to comment.
Qi is a graduate (B.S.) from the Computer Science and Technology Department of Zhejiang University.
