Mr. Sand joined GEF in 2008 and leads GEF’s timber investment team. He brings nearly 35 years of experience in international finance and investments spanning venture capital, investment banking, commercial banking, and multilateral development financing.
Prior to GEF, since 1989, Mr. Sand served as the transaction leader for the International
Finance Corporation (IFC) on projects involving a broad cross-section of sectors and countries. Mr. Sand was Head of the Forest Products Sector group, a position he held since its establishment in 2002. Under Mr. Sand’s watch, the group completed nearly $1.4 billion of new investment commitments for IFC’s own account, which, in turn, catalyzed financing worth about $6.5 billion for new forestry and forest products industry projects. Between 1976 and 1989, Mr. Sand held various positions in investment and commercial banking in his native country Norway.
Mr. Sand has a BS from the University of Lund, Sweden, an MBA in Finance from Berkeley, Norwegian Law School (section 1 of 3) from University of Oslo, Norway and a PhD in International Business from UCLA.
