PAST Experience
Vice President, Star India Pvt Ltd — 2000-2007
At Star he worked on the launch of Star’s channels in the UK. Over the years he has been part of the teams that launched Star Vijay, Star Utsav and Star One.
He went on to handle the Operations function for the network where he was instrumental in raising and maintaining the technical quality standards that Star has come to be known for. He successfully drove a few steps in the step-by-step digitization of content. He has come to be known as a process and systems person who identified the best ways to execute a task and put most efficient processes in place, which even today helps the company. These processes are now documented as part of the company’s succession and contingency planning guidelines.
A six-month deputation at Vijay TV after Star’s takeover of the channel gave him the opportunity to independently set up the Operations and Presentation functions for the channel. He was able to successfully build and train a team that would be in sync with the network’s processes.
Over the years, the responsibility for the Standards and Practices (S&P) department for the network was handed to him. Star has been a pioneer in setting the self-governance practices that is today emulated across the industry. He has been an instrumental force in taking the function through its paces during the early period of the Ministry’s proposal to introduce the Content Code. With Star’s international presence it was his responsibility that the content teams were sensitized to the international guidelines of each territory that the network was beaming out to.
Right from its inception he was responsible for the programming for Star Utsav. He had introduced many successful programming initiatives that are even now being taken through its third and fourth avatars. Star Utsav has leveraged on successful Star Plus and Star Gold content and the network’s strengths in the mobile and Internet spaces to achieve its objectives. Many initiatives were developed which had on-ground activities complement the on-air and online activities and had very satisfied clients like HUL and the Tata Group.
His seven-year tenure with Star has given him a clear understanding of various aspects of television.
Senior Executive, Indian Express Newspapers (Mumbai) — 1998-2000
He started his career selling advertising space with the Indian Express, where he worked on the Loksatta brand. He was a star performer setting unprecedented records in sales month on month.
This two-year tenure with the Express Group has developed his sales skills which has helped him in many aspects of his career.
