Michael Bernhardt has headed up Human Resources at Bayer MaterialScience since 2004 and has been a member of the Executive Committee since July 1, 2011. Since October 1, 2011 he also holds the position of Labor Director in Germany and is as member of the BMS Board of Management. In addition, he took over responsibilities as Regional Caretaker APAC
on BMS Executive Committee level effective April 1, 2013.
Bernhardt was born in Meerbusch, Germany, on January 27, 1967. He studied law in Freiburg and completed his studies in 1995 with his second state examination. He then obtained a master's degree at the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, United States. He completed part of his master's degree working in HR at AEG Transportation Systems, Inc. in Pittsburgh, United States.
He began his career at VAW aluminium AG in Bonn in 1996, where he became head of Personnel Policy in 2000. Two years later as HR Manager, he oversaw the HR integration during the take-over of VAW aluminium AG by the Oslo-based Hydro Group. In 2002, he was appointed head of Human Resources at Hydro Aluminium Deutschland GmbH. In 2004, Bernhardt transferred to Bayer MaterialScience, where he was appointed head of Global Human Resources.
