Michael J. Barry, MD is a champion of shared decision making. As a physician-researcher, Barry has spent his career studying various aspects of shared decision making and putting into practice the knowledge that he’s gained. He has dedicated his career to informing and amplifying the patient’s voice in health care decisions.
As chief science
officer of Healthwise, Barry is responsible for ensuring the highest level of clinical accuracy in Healthwise decision support solutions, as well as the effectiveness of these solutions in helping people make better health decisions. Barry is also president of the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation, now a division of Healthwise, where he is responsible for overseeing its research and advocacy efforts.
He is past president of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM) and the Society of General Internal Medicine. Barry has led many prominent research studies including the Prostate PORT-II and the CAMUS trial. His research interests have included: defining the outcomes of different strategies for the evaluation and treatment of prostate disease, decision analysis, health status measurement, clinical quality improvement, and the use of decision aids to facilitate patients’ participation in decision making. Barry has been published extensively in peer-review journals and other print media on topics such as prostate cancer, BPH, prostate cancer screening, and shared decision making.
Barry continues to practice primary care and serves as medical director of the John D. Stoeckle Center for Primary Care Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also a clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a master of the American College of Physicians. Barry holds an MD from the University of Connecticut Health Center and completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital and his fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
