Matt Choi is the founder and chief strategist of Certus Trading, a trading education company with a focus on mentoring traders and investors to help them achieve consistent profits in trading stocks, ETFs, currencies, options, commodities and financial futures. With almost two decades of trading experience, Matt is a CMT (Chartered Market
Technician) who received his certification from the CMT Association.
Matt Choi is also the co-author of The Winning Way, an Amazon best selling book that he co-authored with Brian Tracy and others. The Winning Way instructs traders on the importance of a psychological mindset in successful trading and, more specifically, describes the three psychological mindsets one must have to achieve success as a trader. While working as an entrepreneur in the automotive industry, Matt Choi began trading with his own money to try to beat the markets. Having learned the hard way that there were no perfect trading systems on the market, he struggled to develop his own algorithm for perfect trading. At first, he achieved a modicum of success, and he soon realized there were no perfect algorithms for trading.
By 2005, Matt decided to scrap everything he thought he knew and to start learning trading from scratch. It was then that he met his trading mentor, the late George Fontanills. George Fontanills helped Matt identify his strengths as a trader, while teaching him how to manage his money to preserve capital when the market was down and how to focus on a few specific markets to maximize his profits. With this new information came the realization that the most critical part of trading is having the right mindset.
Since 2006, Matt Choi has enjoyed a consistently profitable trading career. After developing profitable trading strategies, he decided he wanted to help other traders achieve similar success. In 2011, Matt founded Certus Trading as an education platform to teach other traders the lessons he’d learned the hard way. By teaching trading in a simple, practical way, he motivates other traders to achieve winning results with a winning mindset.
Matt was a 2019 speaker at the TradersEXPO in Chicago, presenting a talk on "Supercharge Dividend Stocks with Options and Profit with Options on Scheduled Stock Moves". He was also a speaker at the 2019 Las Vegas Traders Expo, providing a keynote presentation on“Best Options Strategy We’ve EVER Used!"
Prior to his career in trading, Matt Choi was a successful entrepreneur. He was the Dealer Principal at Hyundai of Oakville, Ontario. In 2003, he purchased the dealership and strategized a remarkable turnaround for the business. Under his guidance, the dealership’s sales skyrocketed from $12 million to $25 million, increasing profits from $600,000 to $1.6 million. Hiring and developing a strong sales team was a key part of his strategy and it paid off. He built a new, state-of-the-art dealership facility and was able to sell the dealership for a multiple seven-figure price to follow his passion in trading.
Matt Choi received his Masters of Business Administration (MBA), with a focus on innovation and technology, from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Prior to that, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Queen’s University.
As a child, Matt Choi grew up in Hong Kong where he discovered his love for trading under the tutelage of his grandfather, who was a very successful investor. His grandfather often took him along to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to watch the prices and quotes listed on those bright green monitors, while explaining how the market worked and discussing his investment philosophy, all of which sparked Matt’s lifelong interest in trading.
In his free time, Matt loves watching soccer and enjoying time with his wife, son and dog at their home in Toronto. Matt loves traveling the world and sampling local and exotic cuisine in his travels.
