In 1998 Marten started studying Multimedia Design & Technology at the Hogeschool Enschede and had developed several websites at the time. In 2004 he obtained his Masters in Interactive Multimedia at the HKU in Hilversum and wrote a thesis on Open Content and the Music Industry.
Marten was actively involved in the Open Source and Open Content
movement and, together with a few enthusiasts, founded the Simuze website, a place where musicians could upload their music for free under a Creative Commons license.
During his studies, Marten registered with the Chamber of Commerce and started his first assignments as an independent entrepreneur under the name Atypisch. About 10 years later, he has several hundred websites to his name, custom online applications, newsletters, web shops and more.
