Jörg Giovanni Frieden, a Swiss national, serves as Executive Director on the Board of the World Bank Group since March 2011, and represents nine constituency countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Poland, Serbia, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Since 2013, he is the Chairman of the Board's Budget Committee.
From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Frieden was an Advisor to the Swiss Executive Director at the World Bank.
Between 1986 and 2003, Mr. Frieden held positions at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in different capacities: Country Director in Mozambique and Nepal, and Head of the East and Southern Africa Division. From 1992 to 1993, he was responsible for the UN-led Civilian Component of the Demobilization Program in Maputo, Mozambique, and from 1999 to 2003, he was a Vice Director at the Federal Office for Migration, in Berne, Switzerland, and responsible for the Directorate of Finance and Social Affairs.
Mr. Frieden earned a PhD in Economics in 1982 from the University of Fribourg. He also holds a license degree in Economics from the same university.
