Jonas Rupp is Director of Marine Policy for the High Seas Issues at Conservation International. In this role, he provides advice and guidance about international policy, in order to promote understanding and to assist in the implementation of international sustainable development commitments.
He developed a partnership between CI, UNEP/GRID-Arendal, and Geoscience Australia in order to produce a new Global Seafloor Geomorphology Mapping Project and Global Ocean Life distribution concept to map the characteristic features of ocean and sea bottoms. Jonas also established business and finance partnerships by working with the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and the World Bank to solidify the creation of the Global Partnership for Oceans.
This partnership focuses on sustainable fisheries, habitat protection, pollution control and cross-cutting issues of climate change resilience. Jonas is also responsible for forming other partnerships to foster sustainable fisheries and biodiversity conservation in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Prior to joining CI in 2010, Jonas worked as a legal specialist in sea law, environment law and Antarctic policy for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Assistant Director for Australian and Overseas Natural Heritage; Assistant Director in Intergovernmental Relations for World Heritage Australia; and Science and Policy Advisor of Australia’s Ministry of Land and Water Conservation.
He also lived in New Zealand, where he worked as Senior Adviser/Policy Officer for the Ministry of Fisheries; Senior Advisor for the Ministry of Justice; and Fisheries Specialist Contractor for the Canadian High Commission.
Jonas is fluent in Swedish and spent most of his childhood years in either Australia or on Swedish merchant navy vessels. From the University of Technology, he earned both his Masters in Integrated Coastal Resource Management and his Bachelors in Ecology/Biotechnology.
