John graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1971, in Civil Engineering and is a founder member of AiC. Following his graduation, John spent three years in the industry, working with contractors on large UK motorway contracts. Later, with a design consultancy, he presented a paper to an ICE Associate meeting in London, on a large water
retention scheme he'd designed.
In 1974 he returned to Nottingham to undertake research into Digital Terrain Modelling, which was still in its infancy. Following his PhD, John remained in education, teaching in several Polytechnics and Universities, both in the UK and overseas. He is the author of several papers and has run PhD research projects in CAD, Ground Modelling, GIS and Knowledge Based Engineering (Expert Systems). After leaving a teaching and research post at Loughborough University of Technology in 1986, he formed AiC with Mike, putting much of what was learnt in research to practical use.
