John’s game programming career began around age six, sitting on the living room floor with a spiral-bound VIC-20 manual. By the time picking college majors came around, Computer Science was the obvious choice.
After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1997, John joined the still relatively unknown Ensemble Studios just in time for
the last months of development on Age of Empires. He quickly learned both how hot Texas summers were (especially when the building AC turned off at 6pm!) and how hard, but rewarding, it is to ship a great game with a great team.
In the years to come, John worked on Age of Empires II, Age of Mythology, Age of Empires III, and Halo Wars — not to mention some cool projects that never saw the light of day. When Microsoft shuttered the studio in 2009, John joined many fellow Ensemble alumni in starting Robot Entertainment. As a Senior Programmer at Robot, John worked on of Age of Empires Online, Orcs Must Die, and Hero Academy. In his more than 15 years of professional game development, John has been fortunate enough to work on just about everything: core libraries, rendering, pathfinding, simulation, AI, random map generation, optimization, networking, UI, tools, audio, the list goes on… He especially enjoys architecting systems, building core technology, and working on tough problems. John would be voted Most Likely to have Ol’ Sh*tty (the min spec machine) and Least Likely to sugar-coat his opinion on code or game design issues. At BonusXP, John hopes to help deliver really fun, polished games that leave you wondering “How’d it get so late already?” when your battery finally runs out.
