Jodi Daniel is a strategic leader at the intersection of policy and health information technology. She serves as Director of the Office of Policy at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Serving in this role since she helped form ONC in 2005, she has
led federal health IT policy through changes in administration and legislation. FierceHealthIT recognized her as one of the “top 10 women in health IT” for 2014.
Jodi works at the forefront of emerging issues in this nascent field. Specifically, having identified market shifts and the potential for greater consumer engagement in health care, she created the ONC consumer e-health program. She has advocated the incorporation of patient-generated health information into the clinical setting and is exploring the potential for mobile health and remote devices to improve experience, care and health outcomes. Jodi identified the need to focus on safety of health IT. She has worked with the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Communications Commission to develop a framework for oversight of health IT that promotes safety and innovation under the FDA Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA).
Jodi has worked with CMS to set policy for the "meaningful use" electronic health record under their incentives program, with the DEA to legalize electronic prescriptions of controlled substances, with the FTC on the establishment of a model privacy notice and on anti-competitive practices in health information exchange, with the FDA and AHRQ on a federal safety plan, and with the OCR on HIPAA rules and guidance for privacy and security of electronic health information. Jodi has also led two prominent federal advisory committees to consensus on challenging policy and technical issues.
Jodi earned a JD from Georgetown University, a MPH from Johns Hopkins University, and a BA in economics from Tufts University.
