Jeffrey J. McCarthy is a managing partner in SOM’s Chicago office and serves on the firm’s Executive Committee. He joined SOM in 1977 and was named a partner in 1990.
McCarthy has extensive experience providing design services for large, complex, mixed-use developments in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In 1987 he moved to England to assist
in opening SOM’s London office. He remained in London through 1989 to manage the master planning of Canary Wharf, a new financial community in the London Docklands.
He currently manages a range of international projects including the new NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium; Jiangxi Nanchang Greenaland Zifeng Tower in Nanchang, China; 201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower in London; and OKO Tower in Moscow, Russia. McCarthy’s current North American projects include the renovation of the Everett M. Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago; Dallas City Performance Hall in Dallas; and the Manulife Office Building in Alberta, Canada.
McCarthy is a high-performance design leader of the firm and has spent the past two years developing SOM’s patent-pending high-performance design methodology to guide the firm’s sustainable design efforts.
McCarthy has a variety of civic and educational commitments. He serves on the President’s Council of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and is a visiting lecturer at the Graduate Practice and Technology Department of the Architectural School at the University of Illinois.
