Jeff van Steenbergen is a founding and General Partner of KERN. Prior to jointly establishing the Firm, he was co-head of North American Oil and Gas with JP Morgan & Co. JP Morgan’s energy sector mergers team played a leading role in the consolidation of the global oil and gas industry. Jeff has been active in the North American and
international energy sector for close to 30 years and has a wide range of experience in oil and gas and energy infrastructure as a private equity investor, investment banker, and in operating and operations management roles with ExxonMobil (Mobil) and with Schlumberger.
Jeff has been a finance professional for 21 years and has broad experience in private equity, capital markets, mergers and corporate finance. He has 10 years of private equity experience with KERN as well as 11 years of energy sector operating experience in North America, Asia and Western Europe, including eight years in offshore drilling operations. Major projects experience with Mobil includes Hibernia (offshore oil production facilities design) and Sable Offshore Energy (natural gas development planning). Jeff was associated with Mobil’s well control response group for five years.
His education includes a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston and an MBA in International Business and Finance from Dalhousie University in Halifax. Jeff also attended a series of Executive Programs at Harvard Business School and INSEAD. From 1982-1987 he held a US Coast Guard Master’s License (Captain) for Mobile Offshore Drilling Units. Jeff is a professional engineer registered in the Province of Nova Scotia.
Jeff represents KERN on the boards of Aduro Resources Ltd., Altex Energy Ltd., Cobalt International Energy, Inc., Fairfield Energy Limited, Magma Global Ltd., OSUM Oil Sands Corp. and Seven Generations Energy Ltd.
