Jeff Van Harte had an interest in numbers and the stock market from an early age. He read his first book on investing at the age of 14, and as a junior college student, studied accounting. Although he considered a career in that field, he decided to explore his longstanding interest in the stock market at California State University, Fullerton
(CSUF). Accepted into the business administration program, he paid for his studies by working as a summer ride operator at Disneyland. The experience he gained was formative and made him realize he had the capacity to lead others.
Jeff Van Harte's coursework at CSUF centered on finance, with courses in financial analysis, securities analysis, and portfolio management. After completing his bachelor's degree, he took a position as a money market trader at Transamerica Investment Services in Los Angeles. When two years later an opportunity to work closely with the equity investment team became available, he relocated to San Francisco to serve as an equity analyst at Transamerica.
In this position, he learned how to analyze all types of businesses. Despite most of his colleagues having advanced degrees, Jeff Van Harte's undergraduate education from CSUF gave him the tools he needed to excel. After two years as an equity analyst, he was given his first opportunity to manage an investment portfolio.
By the end of his tenure at Transamerica, Jeff Van Harte was still managing portfolios and had risen to principal and executive vice president. He became the chief investment officer of the Delaware Investments Focus Growth Team in 2005, then cofounded Jackson Square Partners in 2014. Under his direction as chairman and chief investment officer, Jackson Square Partners grew to $30 billion in assets under management.
Now retired, Mr. Van Harte has given back to his alma matter as the Lead Donor for the Titan Capital Management (TCM) program and as Chair of the Executive Committee that oversees TCM. TCM is an immersive program designed to train students for careers in investment management. He was named a CSUF Vision and Visionaries Distinguished Alumnus in 2012 and has served on the university's Philanthropic Foundation Board of Governors. In 2022, CSUF recognized his philanthropy by awarding him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
