Jared Ailstock is one of New York leading figurative artists. His work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries around the world. Entirely self-taught, Ailstock rose to prominence as a figurative painter by the age of thirty, at a time when painting generally, and portraiture, in particular, had fallen out of fashion.

Jared Ailstock has

earned a reputation as someone known for both traditional and experimental portraiture. Jared has explored more conceptual themes in his series of paintings looking at cosmetic surgery and increasingly his portraits are addressing wider concepts and themes within the paintings’ narrative.

His 2015 first mid-career retrospective at the New York Art Gallery was acclaimed by the critics and public alike. In early 2017 Ailstock began experimenting with 3-D printing and scanning. He has done this in order to make self-portraits.

Ailstock has emerged as one of the foremost pioneers of figurative painting in New York. His career as a painter has seen him confront a multitude of different narratives and themes. The content of his paintings ranges from how we consume and discuss imagery, to the modern-day obsession with social media, cosmetic surgery, and societal portraiture. The appropriate personality to use as a subject is decisive and Jared Ailstock uses them as a vehicle to explore the study of physiognomy, whilst simultaneously tackling often complex narratives and ongoing themes.

Jared Ailstock studied at City University of New York.
