James read Biology at the University of Exeter before studying for a PhD in Biochemistry at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. In 1997 James joined the laboratory of Professor Patrick Vallance at University College London and began working on mechanisms that regulate nitric oxide production. James moved from UCL to the MRC London
