Dr. Ferry is the Stanley Person Professor and Director of the Center for Microbial Structural Biology at Penn State University. He is also a Science Consultant for Synthetic Genomics. His research focuses on understanding bacterial physiology, with a particular interest in the methanogenic bacteria, a subject in which he is well regarded as the
world expert. He also served as editor of the Journal of Bacteriology and is a member of the International Committee on Systematic Bacteriology, Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Methanogenic Bacteria. Dr. Ferry received a Ph.D. in microbiology/biochemistry from the University of Illinois in 1974 and a B.S. degree in agronomy/soil microbiology from the University of Georgia in 1968.
