Ilan's obsession with building unusual digital fabrication tools began with his MIT undergraduate thesis on Rapid Prototyping of Rapid Prototyping Machines in 2008. His creations include a portable 3D printer called Popfab, a collaborative Jacquard loom for weaving friendship bracelets, and several motion stage designs that are now used in
consumer 3D printers. Ilan agrees with Malcolm McCullough that the best tools are transparent extensions of the hand.
