Ian Telfer is a Canadian mining executive, entrepreneur and philanthropist who serves as Chairman of the Board at Goldcorp Inc., a Vancouver-based gold mining company. With more than three decades of experience and service in the Canadian resource sector, Ian is a well-regarded voice in the international mining community.

Ian Telfer earned his

start in mining shortly after graduating from the University of Ottawa with a Master’s of Business Administration degree.

Over the last three decades, Ian has proven himself to be an accomplished business leadership in the mining industry, in part through his ability to build and lead a variety of successful resource companies, including TVX Gold, Wheaton River – which later merged with Goldcorp - Silver Wheaton and Terrane Minerals. Ian’s leadership and business acumen were some of the qualities that allowed these mining companies to reach a combined market capitalization of more than $50 billion during their peak performances.

Over the years, Ian has enjoyed a number accolades in the industry. In 2009, he was appointed the role of Chairman of the World Gold Council, a position he held until 2013.

In 2015, Ian was honoured with an induction into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame for his impact on the Canadian mining sector. Ian was also inducted into the Business Laureates of British Columbia (BLBC) Hall of Fame in 2016.

Having found success in his career, Ian also highly values the idea of giving back to his community and supporting charitable initiatives.

Inspired by the University of Ottawa’s commitment to education and his own time at the school, in 2007 Ian donated a record-setting $25 million to his alma mater. In honour of the generous donation, the University of Ottawa renamed their business school the Telfer School of Management.

Ian has also sponsored cancer research at The Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto and is a long-term supporter of the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation in British Columbia, where he regularly sponsors charity events and foundation initiatives with the support of Goldcorp.

In addition to these philanthropic endeavors, Ian is also a regular sponsor and supporter of The Special Olympics, The Vancouver Aquarium and the Simon Fraser Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.
