Hussein Ata serves as an executive board member of the nonprofit Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA). In his leadership position, he supports the mission of an organization that for more than 30 years has worked to empower people around the world through programs designed to provide relief and facilitate community development. Guided by the tenets of Islam,
IRUSA strives to reach all people in need, regardless of faith.
Through his service to IRUSA and other nonprofits, Hussein Ata has worked to engage and empower the Muslim-American community. His commitment is evidenced by his role as chairman of the largest and most diverse Islamic convention on the continent. Hussein has been involved with the convention for more than two decades and has helped develop it into a multi-faceted, multi-day event serving the needs of the Muslim-American family. Focused on spirituality, knowledge, and activism, the convention offers programming for every age group, including intensive retreats, smaller lectures, interactive workshops, and special sessions for children, preteens, and high schoolers.
Hussein Ata has also served as a senior leader at a variety of related organizations. He is a trustee and treasurer of a nationwide Islamic philanthropic organization that seeks to build a vibrant nationwide community of informed, civically engaged Muslims. Via 40+ chapters and community centers, the organization reaches 14,000 adults and 7,000 youth each week, offering community service opportunities, education, interfaith initiatives, and other programs.
Hussein Ata holds an undergraduate degree in electronics and electromagnetics engineering from the University of Illinois, Chicago. In addition, he is the vice president of a Greater Chicago-area mosque, which he previously led as chairman and president. Highly experienced in the nuclear technology industry, he has held a number of senior positions and maintains a license to operate the reactors at an Illinois nuclear power plant.
