Howard Oliver was a distinct figure in American Civil War history known for his leadership roles in the U.S. Army.
Before entering the army, Howard Oliver grew up in Maine where he went on to attend Bowdoin College. From there, Oliver was appointed to West Point where he graduated fourth in his class in 1854.
After graduating, Oliver
returned to West Point for a while as an assistant professor in mathematics. Throughout his life Oliver always had a passion for education. After the war, he founded Howard University and also contributed to the establishment of Lincoln Memorial University.
After the war, Howard Oliver received the Medal of Honor for his courageous display of strength and bravery after losing his right arm in the Battle of Seven Pines.
