Harold W. Stark a metallurgist and investor was part of the original American team that developed the basis for EDM technology as a result of a project for his employer. An airplane part manufacturer was looking for a way to quickly and efficiently remove broken bolts from airplane parts and tasked the team with developing a machine capable of
such. This team consisting of Harold Stark, Victor Harding and Jack Beaver eventually was able to patent the metal disintegrator, which Harold Stark began making when he started Electro Arc in Detroit, Michigan in 1947. He worked closely with a local university, created a separate sales company and was the first manufacturer of these machines in the world.
