HanBin Lee is the co-founder and CEO of 3D perception software company Seoul Robotics. However, colleagues and partners almost exclusively referred to him as “Cap” as a nod to his role as the captain of the Seoul Robotics ship – and his affection for Captain America.
Cap founded Seoul Robotics alongside co-founders Oran Kwon, Jaeil Park, and Hong
Minh Truong in 2017. The four, who all have backgrounds in 3D data processing, met online in a class on computer vision. They decided to team up for a competition to develop a software system for self-driving cars using data only from LiDAR sensors rather than a combination of camera sensors – unheard of at the time. The team placed 10th out of more than 2,000 teams, validating the company’s approach to 3D perception and inspiring them to develop the initial idea into a business through Seoul Robotics.
The company’s first product, SENSR, reimagined the possibilities of 3D computer vision, and today is the only sensor-agnostic perception software on the market that uses deep learning. Until Seoul Robotics, there was no bridge between LiDAR manufacturers and companies and industries outside the automotive market that could benefit from the insights provided by 3D data. By opening access to these insights, Seoul Robotics is lowering the barrier to entry to 3D data insights and accelerating the adoption of this technology across industries, including smart cities, logistics autonomous mobility, and security.
More recently, Cap led the introduction of Level 5 Control Tower (LV5 CTRL TWR), a revolutionary technology that is fueling autonomous mobility and addressing existing barriers-to-entry. Rather than following the standard approach of equipping each individual vehicle with 3D sensors, LV5 CTRL TWR installs a mesh network of computers and sensors on the surrounding infrastructure. The system then guides vehicles autonomously by “speaking” to the 4/5G systems that come standard on vehicles today.
A deep lover of Crocs and cargo shorts, Cap’s been known to wear them everywhere despite social conventions – including during a meeting with former South Korean President Moon Jae-in. He’s also an avid fan of his Tesla Model 3, even though he vehemently disagrees with Elon Musk on the importance of LiDAR in achieving Level 5 autonomy.
