Gregory Abdullah Mitchell serves as executive director of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC). Through this organization, he works closely with more than 60 schools, social service organizations, and mosques to engage with the community and accurately portray to the public the many contributions of Muslim-Americans in
U.S. society. CIOGC has spearheaded several initiatives to benefit both the Muslim community and Chicago as a whole, with programs ranging from an Illinois Muslim Action Day to an anti-racism task force. In addition, Mitchell and his team have launched efforts to protect refugees, connect individuals to healthcare directly in their communities, and more.
Alongside his work with CIOGC, Gregory Abdullah Mitchell helps direct the development of Islamic Relief USA as a member of its board. This nonprofit humanitarian agency helps people in need around the world through initiatives like hunger relief, disaster response, and microfinancing. Mr. Mitchell remains especially committed to programs that can serve youth. Currently, Islamic Relief USA maintains many youth-focused programs, including a fund to sponsor orphaned children, as well as specialized funds for healthcare and educational support. The organization currently provides aid to more than 28,000 orphaned children in need. Other causes that Islamic Relief USA has spearheaded include clean water, access to healthcare, and refugee aid.
Altogether, Gregory Abdullah Mitchell has spent more than 25 years in board-level leadership positions to support the growth of a range of different Muslim organizations. Mitchell is also an attorney who maintains licensure in the state of Illinois, which has allowed him to provide legal guidance to many of these organizations.
