Dr. Gerd Wolfram is known worldwide as one of the retail industry’s leading technology innovators and a pioneer in the realm of autonomic computing and IoT.
He is best known for his work as senior executive for advanced technologies and technology innovation at Metro AG, the Dusseldorf-based retailer which operates five brands across 31 nations.
Gerd started his career in retail in 1990 in the IT operations of a department store chain, then went on to manage IT strategy, IT procurement, innovation and E-Commerce in the internal IT company of METRO Group. He headed the CIO office at Metro Group and was responsible for the company's Advanced Technologies business unit. Starting in 2002, Gerd managed one of the most innovative projects of Metro Group: its Future Store Initiative, where technologies and systems (including EPC-RFID) were advanced and tested under live conditions.
He was named managing director of Metro Group’s IT company in 2005, with responsibility for strategy, software development, architecture, quality assurance, innovation, human resources and finance.
From 2013, Gerd worked in the Business Innovation Division of METRO Group as Director for portfolio and partner management - trend screening, partner scouting, partner management and innovation projects.
A member of several national and international committees promoting standardization of logistics and merchandise management processes in the context of RFID/EPC, he represented the Metro Group at the international standardization organizations EPCglobal, GS1 Global and GS1 Germany. He was member of several committees in the Consumer Goods Forum. He also set-up the EECC - the European EPC Competence Center.
Gerd recently retired from Metro AG, and now serves as senior vice president and head of systems and solutions at SMARTRAC TECHNOLOGY GROUP. He leads a worldwide organization responsible for solutions and software across different market segments, including retail, automotive, transportation, manufacturing, health care and others.
Gerd holds a diploma in business administration and a PHD from the University of Cologne.
