George Charters graduated with a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in 1975.
Following three years as an engineer and production manager with Shell Chemicals UK, he joined Mars Incorporated, with whom he spent five years in engineering and manufacturing, then seven years in marketing and
sales. His Mars experience covered confectionery and pet foods in the UK, Australia, the USA and Germany.
In 1990 he joined Boots, where he became Director of Merchandise and Marketing for a business with turnover in excess of £3 billion.
From 1995 to 1998 he was Managing Director, Marketing, Trading and Logistics and latterly Deputy Chairman of Safeway, an £8 billion supermarket chain.
He joined Apax Partners as a director with responsibility for retail and consumer products in September 1998.
