Fred DuVal is an entrepreneur, civic leader, advisor, board member, and author. He is the founder and President of DuVal and Associates, a consulting firm established in 2001, which provides expert guidance on government affairs and policy to clients across Washington, D.C., and state capitals. His diverse clientele includes various healthcare,
energy, finance, and infrastructure organizations.
DuVal has had a profound impact on both local and national politics throughout his career. He is serving his second term as a Regent for the Arizona Board of Regents, a position he first received in 2007. His appointment marked a historic milestone as he became the first person in the state's history to be appointed to the Board by both Democratic and Republican governors. In addition to his current role, he served as Chairman of the Board in 2011 and again in 2023. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing various initiatives to improve Arizona's higher education, focusing on accountability, affordability, and access. Notably, he co-chaired a successful initiative that created a program to make credit transfers between community colleges and universities more seamless.
Beyond his work on the Board of Regents, DuVal holds several leadership positions. He is a senior advisor to a global law firm, the Chairman of a publicly traded mining company, and a director at a nationwide car dealership group. His ability to navigate complex issues and lead public and private sector projects has earned him widespread respect.
DuVal's involvement in national politics includes serving as Deputy Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs under President Bill Clinton. In this capacity, he worked closely with state governors and other elected officials, managing intergovernmental relations and playing a pivotal role in initiatives such as welfare reform and national education funding. Before this, Deputy Chief of Protocol for the United States, overseeing diplomatic visits and significant international events.
In addition to his public service work, DuVal has written books, including a collection of op-eds and a piece examining life in Arizona. His writing has helped shape discussions on essential topics, including clean energy and higher education. He is also active in civic life, having served on numerous boards and supported various nonprofit organizations.
Fred DuVal graduated from Occidental College with a B.A. and from Arizona State University College of Law with a J.D. He was born in New Jersey and raised in Tucson, Arizona. An avid hiker, he has completed the Grand Canyon hike in each of the last five decades. He is married to a former director at Mayo Clinic, and they have two sons. He continues to lead by example, using his skills and experience to make a positive difference in his community and the broader world.
