In 2017, the show attempted to challenge slow-food movement chefs by offering prepared ingredients such as canned eel and cheesy poofs. Chef Garrett surprised the judges by creating a canned-seafood cioppino with cheesy poof toasts, demonstrating his culinary expertise. Besides his culinary achievements, Chef Garrett is also involved in philanthropy and charitable activities. He is a major sponsor of the Steilacoom Farmers Market and serves on the Boys and Girls Club board. Most of his charity goes towards groups expanding access to healthy food for those with limited access. In 2020, Chef Garrett appeared with a group of young chefs in Feeding America's coronavirus ad campaign, highlighting the importance of food security during the pandemic.
