Edward Joseph Silvio Picardi, MD, FACS, DABS, has over 30 years of extensive experience as a general surgeon, with his career spanning across various states and countries. He has made significant contributions to trauma surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, and volunteer medical missions, earning acclaim for his patient care, advocacy for life
causes, and dedication to both his local community and underserved populations abroad.
Born on February 15, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his interest in medicine began early. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering in 1979. He continued his education at Hahnemann University, earning a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in 1983.
After medical school, he began his surgical training at Wright-State University and served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. From June 1983 to June 1989, he completed his residency in surgery, gaining broad experience in various surgical techniques and procedures. In July 1989, he was appointed as a staff surgeon at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, serving as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Transitioning to civilian life in 1992, he set up a private practice in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he became one of the leading general surgeons in the region. His exceptional work was recognized in 2001 when he received the Outstanding Surgeon Award from the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He also served as President of this chapter from 1999 to 2000 and played a crucial role in developing the statewide trauma system, ensuring residents had access to quality emergency care.
In 2018, he relocated to Steubenville, Ohio, joining Trinity Health Systems, part of the Catholic Health Initiative. Here, he has continued to excel in his field, bringing expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotics and performing over 250 robotic surgeries. He also serves as a trauma consultant for the regional EMS, working towards advancing the hospital to an ACSCOT trauma III designation.
In addition to his clinical work, he has made significant contributions to medical research. His projects include a study on the effects of streptokinase on experimental mesenteric venous thrombosis, presented at the University Surgeons Meeting in 1989. He has also published numerous papers on topics like laparoscopic spinal fusion and groin exploration in childhood hernia and pioneered the technique of laparoscopic pericardial windows.
A staunch pro-life advocate, his commitment has led him to block key pro-abortion components in legislation, notably during debates on the Affordable Care Act. Despite facing legal challenges, he remains dedicated to protecting life at all stages.
His dedication extends internationally through medical missions with his wife, a registered nurse. Together, they have traveled to Western Africa, contributing to medical initiatives. Beyond his professional commitments, Edward Picardi enjoys hiking and camping with his wife, finding solace in nature away from the demands of his career.
