Dr. Dwaun Warmack currently serves as the 9th President of Claflin University. Prior to that, he served as the president at Harris-Stowe State University. After assuming that role in July of 2014, Dr. Warmack has already helped the university grow and flourish. Under his leadership, HSSU has seen an explosion in student applications by over 900%
and increased new student enrollment has grown by 34%. Additionally, he increased tenured faculty positions by 25% and grew the degree program offerings from 14 to 51 different majors, minors, and certificate programs. Dr. Dwaun Warmack also oversaw the establishing of the university's first honors college to recognize academic scholars who are academically excelling.
Prior to his position with Harris-Stowe, Dr. Dwaun Warmack served as the Senior Vice President for Administration and Student Affairs at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Here, he revitalized the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management through restructuring and reorganization. Dr. Warmack's role as Coordinator of Student Development & Activities and as a Financial Aid Counselor, allowed him to be fully immersed in his chosen field and launch a fulfilling career aimed towards transforming the lives of others, particularly, underserved groups. After making great strides with this institution, Dwaun Warmack accepted a promotion and new position as Director of Multicultural Affairs at Western Carolina University. In 2005, he accepted another challenge as an Associate Dean at Rhodes College. His most notable accomplishment was his role in the establishment of the Western North Carolina Minority Networking Program. In 2010, Dr. Warmack accepted the position of Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and later as Senior Vice President of Administration and Student Services at Bethune-Cookman University.
Dwaun Warmack is not only dedicated to his professional fortes but also to the concept of higher education being the great “equalizer” in the U.S. His personal and professional success has been nothing short of monumental and is a testament to what can be accomplished when those in positions of authority identify problem areas and steadfastly subsequently find innovative and effective solutions. Dr. Warmack’s expertise, research, and novel approaches to contemporary issues have led to appearances on CNN, C-SPAN, and NPR, to name a few.
Dr. Warmack received his Bachelor of Science in Education and his Master of Education at Delta State University. He then earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership with Specialization in Higher Education from Union University. Additionally, he completed Post-Doctoral work in Educational Leadership at Harvard University.
Dwaun Warmack is currently undertaking a passion project that he hopes will reform the prison system in the United States. This work is Inspired not only by the very personal impact of mass incarceration has on his family, but by the many injustices of mass incarceration. He aspires to glean insight and useful data as he travels across the U.S., Ireland and Germany to investigate the different methods utilized prisons in regards to education and rehabilitation. Dr. Warmack desires to fully understand the mechanisms behind mass incarcerations further so he can apply new theoretical constructs to completely shift the mass incarceration narrative. Dwaun's weapon of choice in this battle? Education. By furthering his education on the various methods to prevent crime as well as rehabilitate offenders, he believes he can enact change in society as well as the prison system to bring about a safer and overall quality of life.
