Dr. Scott B. Berger currently serves as a quality assurance radiologist and medical consultant based in Stamford, Connecticut, where he reviews radiological cases for diagnostic accuracy and provides expert witness testimony on complex neuroradiology cases. Since transitioning from clinical practice in December 2020, he has focused on ensuring
diagnostic standards through peer-review processes mandated following the Mammography Quality Standards Act. He maintains board certification in radiology with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology while developing initiatives to preserve medical knowledge for future generations. Dr. Berger is establishing a scholarship fund for medical students, mentoring young radiologists, and collaborating with academic colleagues to create a database of complex cases that demonstrate how diseases present differently from textbook examples. His perspective on artificial intelligence in radiology, informed by both his computing background and decades of clinical experience, recognizes AI's capabilities in detecting specific abnormalities while emphasizing that comprehensive diagnostic interpretation still requires human expertise developed through years of pattern recognition. Dr. Berger's path to medicine began with an unusual combination of interests in neuroscience and computer programming, starting when he purchased a programmable Hewlett-Packard calculator in 1975. He pursued neurobiology and computer science at Emory University, working with Westinghouse Corporation's supercomputer division and conducting research at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science. This foundation led to a nine-year combined MD and PhD program through Cornell University Medical College, Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (1983-1992), where he studied brain structures controlling blood pressure under Dr. Donald Reis. Following residency and fellowship training at Yale University, he began practice in 1998 as the sole neuroradiologist in a 15-physician group in Danbury, Connecticut, later serving as Vice Chairman of Radiology at Danbury Hospital and maintaining clinical practice with CareMount Medical until 2020. Throughout his clinical career spanning over two decades, Dr. Berger witnessed and adapted to fundamental changes in neuroradiology. Early in his practice, he split time equally between invasive procedures like angiograms, threading catheters through arteries to visualize brain vasculature, and interpreting imaging studies. The field transformed with the development of MR and CT angiography, which could visualize blood vessels non-invasively, and the emergence of interventional neuroradiology as a separate subspecialty. Dr. Berger distinguished himself through an unusually patient-centered approach, regularly meeting with patients to explain imaging results during an era of increasingly compressed medical encounters. This commitment earned him recognition as a "Top Doctor" from New York Magazine, inclusion in the "Best Doctors in America" database, and special recognition from the New York Police Department for his dedicated care of officers and their families. Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Berger has maintained diverse commitments to service and education. Trained as a cantor under Holocaust survivor Moshe Taube, he served for nearly a decade as spiritual leader for a small Pennsylvania congregation and continues performing for senior living communities. His recent humanitarian efforts include a 2024 mission to Israel during the ongoing conflict, where he met with government officials and military personnel while witnessing the crisis firsthand, including visiting Majdal Shams where twelve children died in a missile strike. Together with his wife Amy, he supports organizations including Neighbors Link, which assists immigrant families and underserved communities. Through his quality assurance work, mentorship, planned scholarship fund, and efforts to preserve diagnostic expertise for future generations, Dr. Berger continues to impact medical care and education well beyond direct patient interaction, embodying a career-long philosophy of service through multiple channels
