Dr. Morris Brown, a dedicated physician and community advocate, was born in 1948 in Anniston, Alabama. As the fourth child in a family of eight, his formative years were influenced by his parents—his mother, a nurse’s aide who started as a sharecropper and domestic worker, and his father, a laborer who also ministered as a Baptist preacher. The

racial tensions and injustices of his youth, marked by events such as the murder of Emmitt Till and the burning of the Freedom Riders bus in his hometown, instilled in him a strong desire to bring about change.

Dr. Brown’s early work experience as a bagger and cashier marked one of the first integrations into the workforce in his area. This role, combined with helping his mother at the doctor’s office where she worked, sparked his ambition to pursue a career in medicine. He pursued his education zealously, graduating third in his class from Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston and actively participating in leadership roles, including class president.

He attended Knoxville College, a historically black liberal arts college in Tennessee, where he continued developing his leadership skills within the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and student government, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology. His pursuit of medical education led him to Meharry Medical School, one of the country’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) medical schools. Meharry is located in Nashville, Tennessee, and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Dr. Brown excelled at Meharry, benefiting from significant research and clinical experiences, and graduated in 1974.

Following medical school, he joined the United States Air Force Medical Corps, serving as the Director of Aerospace Medicine. His service included providing essential healthcare services to airmen at remote sites and lasted three years. After the Air Force, Dr. Morris Brown, Dayton, was instrumental in the rebuilding efforts at Central State University following the devastating Xenia, Ohio tornado. His efforts were crucial in securing funding to reconstruct the community and student health center, a task for which his military experience had well-prepared him.

In 1981, he joined the Family Medicine Residency program at Wright State Medical School/Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. His medical career saw him addressing healthcare disparities, particularly in marginalized communities. Over the next 35 years, Dr. Brown’s practice grew significantly, eventually serving over 10,000 patients in the Miami Valley region.

Retiring from medicine in 2018, Dr. Brown has not slowed down. He continues his work through the nonprofit “Above the Law,” which focuses on criminal justice reform and providing alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent youth. Additionally, Dr. Morris Brown, Ohio, remains active as a Certified Medical Legal Consultant at All Ways Legal LLC and as the Chief Financial Officer of Central Solutions LLC, delivering insights into logistics for commercial maintenance in the more significant Ohio market.

His legacy is also marked by numerous awards and accolades, including being Board Certified in Family Medicine for 35 years, receiving the Commander’s Award for Healthcare from the Air Force, and various community service awards. In his time, Dr. Brown enjoyed chess and jazz and engaging in cultural activities, always seeking to enrich his community and advocate for those in need.
