Oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Louis Bourget is trusted by patients in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada’s Atlantic provinces.

Canadian oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Louis Bourget draws upon an extensive background of academic degrees, fellowships, and medical training to perform high-quality OMS procedures, from wisdom tooth extraction

and implants to biopsies, Botox, TMJ surgery and full-face reconstruction.

Serving patients in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Labrador and beyond, Dr. Bourget began a course of rigorous training in oral and maxillofacial surgery over three decades ago. Along the way, he has earned two master’s degrees, a surgical specialty, a PhD, and a bachelor’s degree in Physiology, along with a wide range of certifications and fellowships.

He served his first internship at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. He was awarded a FRCD(C) fellowship after successfully completing the maxillofacial program at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Dr. Bourget never stops learning. He has studied facial reconstruction at the Mayo Clinic and at medical centers in Vienna, Sweden, San Francisco, St. Louis, and Michigan. He completed facial cosmetic fellowships in North Carolina and France, where he studied cleft lip and palate reconstruction.

Dr. Bourget’s practice is centered on Dartmouth in Nova Scotia, the South Shore Regional Hospital in Nova Scotia, Truro, and the Gander Family Dental Clinic in Newfoundland. Visitors to the Gander Family Dental Clinic and the Truro office are delighted to meet his assistant, Finley, the doctor’s charming Cortisol Detection Service Dog. Finley has been trained to identify levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is a key indicator of stress and anxiety, and Finley is able to detect fluctuations in a patient’s cortisol level. In addition to this unique medical skill, Finley provides comfort to patients, especially children.

Dr. Bourget is not only passionate about his work, he is compassionate and deeply committed to helping others. Each year he organized a surgical team that travels abroad to participate in medical missions to communities in Brazil and Africa, providing life-changing medical care to adults and children with severe birth defects and other serious facial/dental issues.

Through his connections and work, Louis Bourget has been able to obtain medical supplies from different hospitals he works at, repackage them, and send at least one container to Africa to help hospitals that need them. With a love and passion for cooking, Louis Bourget and his family donate time, money, and food to four different shelters in Nova Scotia every year. They have prepared meals for many residents (as many as 60) on special occasions, including Christmas, Easter, Canada Day, Thanksgiving, and others. Before studying dentistry and oral surgery, Louis Bourget worked as a paramedic and lifeguard for years. In his off hours, he enjoys sailing, skiing, and martial arts.
