He's traversed a diverse and remarkable career path in the academic sector, holding roles that range from Professor of English to College President. Each position has been marked by
an unyielding dedication to intellectual growth and development, illustrating a deep well of knowledge and an extraordinary commitment to education. The journey to professional prominence began with an impressive educational foundation. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from Alabama A&M University, he pursued a Master's in English Education from Virginia State University. Further solidifying his academic expertise, he completed a Ph.D. in English, focusing on Literature and Criticism, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. These achievements in higher education laid the groundwork for a career defined by versatility and a tireless commitment to academic excellence.
One of the most significant milestones in his career was taking the helm at Western Illinois University (WIU) as its President. During this period, he presented unprecedented financial challenges at the state level, necessitating exceptional leadership skills. Tasked with managing a budget nearing $224 million, he navigated the institution through these turbulent fiscal waters with grace and understanding. Despite the financial constraints, he successfully increased diversity, formulated new academic programs, and significantly strengthened ties with businesses, local communities, and K-12 educational systems. His fiscal wisdom shone brightly during Illinois' state financial crisis. Under his stewardship, WIU managed to maintain operations and successfully opened a new campus in Moline, Illinois. This tenure also witnessed the completion of a multi-million dollar capital campaign. Thanks to these efforts, the institution garnered significant accolades, including a 'Best in the Midwest College' recognition by the Princeton Review and being ranked as a top-tier Midwest Master's institution by U.S. News and World Report.
