Donato Sferra is a Toronto-based business executive and investor specializing in the cannabis sector. He is currently principal and managing partner at Hillcrest Merchant Partners, an angel investment firm focused on a number of industries, including cannabis, blockchain, mining and tech. Donato has extensive experience in the financial sector and
has worked for firms that include TD Securities, Macquarie Group and Dundee Capital Markets.
Sferra has also co-founded a plant-based foods company called Above Food Corp., where he serves as Chief Corporate Development Officer and Executive Vice President.
Prior to establishing Hillcrest Merchant Partners in 2017, Donato Sferra served as the managing director of investment banking at Eight Capital, where he led the company’s cannabis investment banking team.
Donato also served at Dundee Capital Markets, first as director of institutional sales, then as managing director of investment banking, where he had his first exposure to the cannabis sector, as well as electric metals, mining, gaming and tech.
From 2009 to 2011, Donato worked as the director of institutional sales at Toronto investment bank Macquarie Group, where he gained experience in the areas of Canadian equities and North American institutions.
Donato began his investment career serving as an equity research analyst at TD Securities, specializing in auto parts, solar and automation.
Donato Sferra also practiced as a Chartered Accountant at global accounting firm, Arthur Andersen, serving as a senior auditor from 1998 to 2002. Donato is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst. He studied accounting at the Schulich School of Business at Toronto’s York University.
