In January 2014, Don joined as President and CEO, after serving as the President of British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) for five years. During that time, the institute experienced a reinvigoration that secured its reputation as one of the province’s leading post-secondary institutions.
Don’s career spans both the public and private
sectors, across a range of industries. He has held posts in B.C.’s public sector as deputy minister in the ministries of forestry and education, as well as secretary to the Treasury Board. In the ‘80s, he served as deputy and assistant deputy minister in the ministries of trade and investment, and education for the Province of Saskatchewan.
In the private sector, Don has been Vice-President of Forestry, Environment and Corporate Affairs at Weldwood of Canada and the Principal of Analytica Consulting, were he acted as chief negotiator for the Province of British Columbia in the softwood lumber negotiations with the United States; commissioner that reviewed teacher collective bargaining in British Columbia; and advised private sector clients on merger and acquisition strategies.
Don holds a Bachelor of Commerce (University of Saskatchewan), a Master’s in Economics (UBC) and a PhD in Economics (Harvard University). He has sat on many boards in the profit and not-for-profit sectors, including Covenant House Vancouver, Tolko Industries and the Business Council of B.C.
